4-HBA is a globally registered acrylate monomer consisting of an acrylate group with a characteristic high reactivity and a hydroxyl function connected via a butyl linker to the acrylate.
Copolymers of 4-HBA can be prepared with acrylic acid and its salts, amides and esters, and with methacrylates, acrylonitrile, maleic acid esters, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, styrene, butadiene, unsaturated polyesters and drying oils etc.
Due to the longer linker (compared to conventional hydroxy-functional monomers such as hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) or hydroxypropyl acrylate (HPA)) the hydroxy group is well accessible, supporting good adhesion of the coating polymer on polar surfaces and exceptional fast curing with isocyanates.
As a very low viscous hydroxy monomer, a main application of 4-HBA is the use as reactive diluent of radiation cured resins (e.g. for ink-jetting, printing inks, UV coatings etc.). Furthermore, 4-HBA exhibits high reactivity under UV conditions in combination with good compatibility with a broad range of pigmented and non-pigmented resin systems.
